Don't Mistake This For A Blog Post

It's a meme between me and myself to see whether or not I can remember all the concerts I've been to. If this is too self-indulgent even for a blog, please to move along and watch this instead. Thanks!

  • James Taylor
  • Cheap Trick (I was 14 years old)
  • Grateful Dead (42,000,034 times)
  • Peter Gabriel
  • Joe Jackson
  • Elvis Costello (good concert, bad date)
  • Indigo Girls
  • 808 State (broke my toe dancing)
  • Dee-Lite
  • Live (sucked so bad)
  • The Who (once at JFK Stadium in Philly)
  • Police
  • The Clash
  • The Pretenders (Erg. Chrissy must have been having a bad night.)
  • Madness
  • Hooters
  • R.E.M.
  • My Bloody Valentine
  • Stone Roses
  • PIL
  • The Cramps (New Year's Eve in Washington, D.C.)
  • Dead Milkmen
  • Stevie Nicks (Teh Awesome and let me tell me, I'm not a big Stevie fan)
  • Suzanne Vega (At Berklee School of Music in Boston. She was taking questions from the audience and being real cool about it until someone asked her if a certain song was about giving a bl*w job to her boyfriend. She reprimanded us and said No More Questions. We felt bad that we couldn't all have behaved better.)
  • Yes (For real)
  • Eurythmics
  • Rush (Seriously Teh Awesome)
  • The Kinks
  • Dire Straits
  • George Thorogood
  • Simple Minds
  • Crosby, Stills and Nash
  • Lyle Lovett
  • k.d. lang (Yes, I was crushing on her.)
  • Depeche Mode
  • The The
  • Frank Sinatra (at Hershey Arena)
  • Beck (At which my friend and I handed him a tape of our rap song. Yes, it was that bad.)
  • Gogol Bordello (possibly the best show evah, even more than the one where I broke my toe)
  • Jeffrey Gaines
  • Loudon Wainwright III (good heavens, but I adore this man in the way I adore Tom Robbins)
  • Squeeze (I think. It was "that year", ya know?)
  • Matthew Sweet
  • New Order
  • Oasis
  • Lou Reed
  • U2 (a few times, some with explosions, but many with messianic overtones)
  • Badly Drawn Boy
  • The Cardigans
  • Stray Cats
  • The Smithereens
  • The Cure
  • David Bowie
  • Rickie Lee Jones
  • Todd Rundgren (I seem to remember this concert taking place in a closet somewhere in Kenmore Square. It could have just been tunnel vision. And panic.)
  • Bob Dylan
  • Little Feat
  • Dinosaur Jr.
  • Aimee Mann (and I played softball with her and she never picked me for her team and I'll never forgive her even though I like her music fine)
  • Santana
  • Billy Bragg
  • Robyn Hitchcock

I think there are more.

What?

I told you this was an exercise in exercising my memory and convincing myself that I was once cool and with it.

At the very least, if I download all this stuff onto the Internet, I can free up more space in my brain to remember where my keys are and remember to recharge my cell phone and remember to stop calling my kids by the cats' names.

Fine. Here. Watch this. I listen to it at least once a day. Like vitamin B12.

I did this same exercise a while ago but I had my bands WRITTEN down in a little book that I had started years and years ago---I was that nerdy.

We have loads of bands in common but I was never, ever, ever into the Dead---maybe if I had seen them live b/c I did spend a weekend at a Phish show and hated the music until I smoked pot, ate mushrooms and inhaled a balloon of nitrous. Then? They rocked!

Waitaminute, RUSH?!? Are you really a boy? My husband just saw them a cpl of years ago and said the entire band was white geeky men.

"My husband just saw them a cpl of years ago and said the entire band was white geeky men."

Most rock bands are made up of geeky white men, aren't they? That's why they have to be in rock bands in the first place. It's amazing what a combination of money, a guitar, and hip facial hair configurations will do for one's geekiness. ;-)

You saw Simple Minds? Jealous. I still think one of their albums is one of the best of all time. I'd go look for the title but I'm tired.

This reminds me of the back page in my old diary with the list of all the guys I ever made out with.

And I like your taste in ze musik!

Wow, that's impressive. The The!
They had it goin' on.
There seems to be one giant hole in the list, no Van Morrison.
Then it just might be perfect.
Also, if you saw Dire Straits, you just might need UB40 in there. How about The Cure? OK, the dream list is neverending and I remain impressed.

Actually, I *did* see The Cure! Orpheum Theater in Boston, 1985.

Dead Milkmen? Jealous. (Well, my 14 year old me is jealous.) But I did get a written response to a fan letter from them. Just remembered that!

How do you get to play softball with Aimee Mann?

Do you still remember the rap you gave to Beck? Please post it asap.

I was visiting my mother last week and found this box she said was full of stuff of mine from my youth. Along with a torn piece of a Schlitz beer bottle label attached to a piece of paper indicating that it was from a beer I shared with Rob (my pathetic jr. high crush), I found a ticket stub from the Frampton Comes Alive tour that I caught at the Boston Garden back in 1970-something. How much do you think I could get for that on eBay?

I still have Billy Bragg on my mp3 player. Who doesn't love a pint-sized English socialist?

I have missed two chances to see Gogol Bordello, once out of laziness. So pissed about that.

Yeah! Good sharing to all your readers. UB40 is my favourite band. Better you put in your list.

Impressive.
But my favorite part is this:
"if I download all this stuff onto the Internet, I can free up more space in my brain to remember where my keys are and remember to recharge my cell phone and remember to stop calling my kids by the cats' names."

Because...how right are you? We just need to get some of this stuff OUT OF OUR BRAINS and know that it is SAFE ON THE INTERNET and we can refer back to it whenever we question ourselves. Love love love it.
